English language proficiency
There is no intensive English language program offered at CalArts. Applicants are expected to be proficient in the English language before applying for admission. Applicants with a native language other than English must score at least 550 on the standard TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), 213 on the computer-based TOEFL or 80 on the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) to be considered for the BFA programs. MA and MFA applicants must score 600 on the standard TOFEL, 250 on the computer-based test or 100 on the internet-based test. Applications from international students may not be reviewed if they do not include a TOEFL score.
Applicants whose native language is not English may be exempted from the TOEFL requirement only if they can provide proof of two years of successful academic study in the U.S. or at an institution at which the language of instruction is English. The TOEFL may be required from any student whose proficiency is in question and will often be required of students who took ESL classes while in high school in lieu of standard English classes.
