Andre a native of Greenville, North Carolina began his training at the School of the Garden State Ballet. Mr. Tyson is a former Principal Dancer and Company Teacher with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (1985-1994) and a Certified Pilates Instructor. Mr. Tyson was an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts Department of Dance (1998-2008) prior to joining the faculty. Mr. Tyson has created works for a broad range of companies such as Ballet Forder Zentrum, Ailey II, Fordham University, de Theatreschool Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Jazz Dance Company, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Milwaukee Ballet and UWM PSOA Department of Dance respectively. He served as Rehearsal Assistant to Talley Beatty restaging The Stack Up, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for the American Dance Festival and The Road of the Phoebe Snow, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Additionally, he restaged Ailey’s Sinner Man and Mean Ole’ Frisco for the 65th Anniversary Celebration of Men Dancers at Jacob’s Pillow. Mr. Tyson has participated in the Carlisle Project and choreographed Ain’t Misbehavin for the Skylight Opera. Mr. Tyson appeared in two featured articles Ailey Men /Dance Magazine and An Interview with Professor/Dancer Andre Tyson /Dancer Magazine. He was a New Jersey State Council of the Arts Fellow and received grants from Alvin Ailey Dancer’s Resource Fund, UW-Milwaukee Faculty Development Fund and Arts and Humanities Awards Program (1998-2008). Mr. Tyson has taught at the International Tanz Wochen in Vienna, Austria and the International Sommerakademie des Tanzes in Koln, Germany. Teaching at Smith College, Wake Forest University, de Theaterschool Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Long Island University and North Carolina School of the Arts, Mr. Tyson functioned as a member of the Contemporary Dance Faculty. Mr. Tyson's career reflects work and collaboration with a stellar roster of artists in both live and recorded performances. Mr. Tyson has appeared in the music videos of Michael Jackson, Nona Hendryx and Grace Jones as well as several Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Concert Dance videos. Mr. Tyson has performed as a guest artist with Allyson Green Dance, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions Dance Company. Mr. Tyson continues to teach and choreograph nationally and internationally.
