In spring 2009, CalArts will open a new outdoor pavilion at the entry to campus. This state-of-the-art facility for performances, rehearsals and classes will serve as a place of possibility--where creativity, innovation and collaboration know no bounds.
The new music pavilion has been named The Wild Beast by lead donor Abby Sher in honor of composer Morton Feldman's metaphor for mystery of sound and silence from which the vibrant of music emerges. The design of the Wild Beast is open, fluid and flexible, enabling a myriad of performance opportunities for every program in the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts. All musical styles and cultures represented in the school's curriculum can be accomodated by the pavilion's flexible design.
The elegant, sculptural architecture of The Wild Beast was created by the firm of Hodgetts + Fung--the Los Angeles-based team that was also responsible for the recent renovation of the Hollywood Bowl. The Wild Beast will open new opportunities for performances by guest artists as well as helping to meet the rehearsal and instructional needs of current and future students at CalArts. In addition, the school is planning a lively series of outdoor concerts for audiences in the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond.
