CalArts Digital Collections

CalArts Artists Books Collection includes handmade books, small independent press books, rare graphic novels and books designed by artists including CalArts students, alumni and faculty. The collection began in the mid-1960s and includes many books by conceptual, Fluxus and feminist artists. Books are listed in the library catalog and may be viewed upon request in the main Library.

CalArts Tiny Press Practices Collection contains books made by CalArts students who participated in Literary Citizenship: Tiny Press Practices, a course offered by Jen Hofer (former School of Critical Studies Faculty) from 2010-2016. Each participant created a text-based object using various techniques relating to bookmaking and gave one copy to the Library.

CalArts MFA Graphic Design Books were created by School of Art Graphic Design students from 2001-2014 to represent a culmination of their M.F.A. work. The books are located in the CalArts Library Artists Books Collection room and may be requested to view.

CalArts Groundbreaking

'The Great Ground Breaking' at California Institute of the Arts took place on May 3, 1969. The audio was taken from the ceremony as Thomas Lowe, then-president of Newhall Land & Farming Company addresses the gathered crowd. The audio track has been superimposed on construction footage. Soundtrack by CalArts grad Stephanie Cheng Smith (Music MFA 11).
