Finding Articles

History and criticisms will likely make up the bulk of your research and includes information found in articles and books - both scholarly and popular. Criticisms are not reviews, which will discuss the quality of the work, whether it's good or bad, and generally how it's been received. Criticisms, on the other hand, are works that delve into the critical nature of the work; for example, a particular work will be put into social or political context and the author may discuss how the work fits into that context. These types of articles are generally scholarly in nature and can provide valuable information to the student-researcher!

Below are several electronic databases where you will find articles related to music.

Search the Catalog

Main Library Stacks and Online

The CalArts Library offers a incredibly wide range of resources — from books, eBooks, music scores, and sound recordings, to films, periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) and more. Many of these physical items are located in the "main stacks" or the shelving you see in the library.

Distinct Collections

Additionally, CalArts Library has other resources that are kept in Special Collections, Artists' Book Collection, or the Institute Archives. Items in these areas are considered unique and have limited access and do not circulate. Many of the items in these distinct collections are also located in the CalArts Library catalog (feel free to use the search bar below) to get started!
