Library Student Employment

The CalArts Library and Film/Image Services employs 50+ students during the academic year as well as a smaller number in the summer. Student assistants are hired for a variety of jobs in circulation, image services, film services, the Bijou, and technical processing. Pay rates range from $15.50 to $20.00 and are commensurate with the skill and experience required for the job.

Employment opportunities are available for both work-study and non-work-study students.  Most students work an average of ten hours per week. Students working in public service areas often work nights and/or weekends. Students may not exceed 20 hours per week during the academic year and 39 hours per week during the summer.  All positions are non-benefited.

Students awarded Federal Work study awards are given priority for open positions.

Review the online job descriptions in Compass (filter by employer for CalArts Library). Apply by submitting a resume and completing the online application form specific to the position.

All positions require a minimum commitment of four hours per week. Job postings can be found on Compass when we are hiring. Generally, jobs are posted one to two weeks before the beginning of the semester. Job postings will be removed once the open positions are filled.

Students who have accepted a Federal Work Study award are eligible for work in the library.  In order to apply for a position, all appropriate I-9 documents must be turned in to Financial Aid Office for verification before applying for a position. 

Please follow the application steps outlined below.

  • Submit resume via Compass to the position supervisor.
  • Complete online application form for specific position. Link to the application form is in the position description.
  • The hiring manager will reach out to you to schedule an interview.
  • Upon hiring, the student worker must complete an online SSA.
  • Student workers may not begin working until the SSA is processed and all hiring paperwork is completed. Student workers will be notified by the hiring manager when the hiring process is complete and may begin working. NOTE: You must have all I-9 documents on file with Financial Aid Office in order to be considered for a student position.

The Hub is the location of the CalArts Webadvisor and where you will enter hours worked on your electronic time card.  Time cards must be completed and electronically submitted by all pay period deadlines in order for on time payment of wages.
