CalArts Special Collections & Institute Archives

 

The CalArts Library’s Special Collections & Institute Archives department houses collections of rare and unique materials of enduring cultural and historical value in support of research and art making by scholars, artists, students, and the general public.

Parking on campus is free. Special Collections and the Institute Archives are located in the library, on the 2nd floor of CalArts' Main Building.

Institute Archives 

  • Search our collections. 
  • Need to know if we have something in our archives? Want to view something from our archives?
  • Request an instruction session for hands-on, collection-based learning experiences (email kcarbone@calarts.edu).
  • Request digitized copies of materials. 
  • Ask a general question (see form below).

Please allow 7-10 days for the processing of all requests.

Archives Viewing Hours

Monday-Friday (September-May)

Monday-Thursday (May-August)

9:30am-4:00pm

Viewing is by appointment only and hours may vary depending on availability.

Special Collections 

To view any items from Special Collections you must schedule an appointment with Brena Smith. Items do not circulate and must be viewed under supervision in the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room. Circulation staff cannot retrieve items from special collections.
