CalArts Oral History Program Mission

The mission of the CalArts Library’s Oral History Program is to document the artistic, administrative, and educational history of the California Institute of the Arts. To carry out this mission, we manage the collection of oral history interviews of distinctive faculty, staff, administrators, and students who have shaped the collective memory of CalArts.

Participate in the CalArts Oral History Program (Suspended until Fall 2019)

For Interviewees:

If you are a current or former faculty member, or alumni and would like to be interviewed, please contact the Oral History Program Manager. Priority is currently being given to faculty members who meet the following criteria:

  • Faculty
    • Founding faculty members
    • Faculty members who taught at CalArts in the 1970s
    • Faculty members either nearing retirement or have retired
  • Alumni
    • Alumni who graduated 1985 or earlier

For Interviewers:

If you are interested in conducting an interview to be included in the Oral History Collection, please contact the Oral History Program Manager. You will need to complete the following before the interview(s):

  • An interview guide (to be approved by the Oral History Program Manager)

And after the interview(s):

  • Audio files submitted in .wav format and of excellent quality
  • Time-stamped logs of interview(s)
  • A cataloging worksheet
  • A list of proper names
